End of the world theories have been around for almost as long as mankind itself. Throughout history there have been prophets and prophecies, doomsayers and dooms days. From well known sources to the obscure, apocalyptic prophesies always make people wonder if this is really the end. Some of the more popular theories concerning the end times include ideas about Stonehenge, the mysterious Mayan Calendar, the much sought after crystal skulls, the prophecies of Nostradamus and studies done in modern times by the likes of Zecharia Sitchin, Nancy Lieder, and Terence McKenna to name a few. Some look at this as just an end of an era in the human existence, while others speak of hell on Earth.
Putting all of these end of the world theories aside, let’s look at a more popular theory concerning Armageddon that has gained a world wide cult following. ZOMBIES!!!! A zombie is a dead person that has came back to life by some means of regeneration and seeks to feed on the flesh of the living. Being bitten or scratched by a zombie will cause a living creature, whether they’re a person or an animal, to die and return as one of the living dead. This pandemic, if not controlled, could spread at a startling rate. This means that the entire world would be subject to the terror of an undead plague that could kill every living thing on Earth in a matter of weeks.
To some people, this is nothing more than a far fetched, fantasy based theory that is just a way to keep children in line, much like the boogieman. Is it really a fantasy, though? People have died and been resuscitated before. So, why would it be so hard to believe that it could happen in a different kind of way? The dead returning to life is biblical in origin, which is declared as a hell on Earth, as written in the Book of Revelations. Are you still skeptical? Let’s talk about some of the possibilities of how the dead could return.
The Large Hadron Collider, which is the largest man made thing ever constructed (and the most dangerous), is set to be upgraded in October of 2012. Scientists have only speculated on exactly what will happen when the start sequence re-initiated. It could go off without a hitch or it could be the largest man made disaster in known human history. For this reason alone there have been numerous lawsuits filed to stop the production of work on the Large Hadron Collider. Let’s assume for just a second that the restart goes well and works better than the world could have ever hoped.There’s still the prophesies surrounding Dec. 21, 2012. The L.H.C. works fine for a couple of months, and then...MELTDOWN. The prophecy is fulfilled and the ensuing radioactive fallout causes the zombie apocalypse. Those not killed initially will be at the mercy of the living dead.
Another theory of how this could happen is scientific studies concerning stem cell research. Although thought to be a break through in the fight against paralysis and other such ailments concerning spinal cord and brain injuries, stem cell research could possibly be the way the zombie apocalypse is triggered. There are a lot of people who are against stem cell research, saying that man is trying to “play God”. Is it so far fetched to believe, that in a world like the one we currently live in and with the medical knowledge that we have, that brain trauma becomes a thing of the past? Taking this further, unexpected side effects cause a rapid degeneration after a period of time. The living now become the living dead. With their brains still firing due to the stem cell research, after the person has died, he or she continues to be animated. To feed the motor neurons in the brain, a constant and insatiable desire to eat human flesh takes over. To feed becomes the reason to exist.
These end of the world theories should be a breath of fresh air, considering the other options on the subject have been driven into the ground. I’m not saying that the others are less likely, only that this is just as likely. What will happen on Dec. 21, 2012 is still to be seen.
