One of the biggest things people cite when talking about the 2012 prophecy is the ancient Mayan calendar and how it basically informs us all when the world will end.
If you didn't know about them until now, the Mayans were an ancient civilization that lived around 2,600 B.C.. They developed a system of calendars and almanacs that proved to be superior to that of their contemporaries and ancestors. They used what is referred to as the "long count" in regards to creating and keeping track of their calendars. This long count calendar ends very abruptly in December of 2012 and as such, many people believe this will be the ultimate world catastrophe -- Armageddon. However, there is no evidence to this notion as when the Spanish ransacked their culture in the 1400s and 1500s, they destroyed most of the Mayans' records of the past -- many of which held many, MANY secrets and much wisdom about the world as a whole. Instead, to the contrary of the end of times prophecies, the Mayan calendar's ending in 2012 denotes a time of rejuvenation and peace.
Apparently, it can go either way, but evidence has been building to suggest that the end of times will indeed kick-start or culminate in December of 2012. This is the primary and most highly regarded of all of the 2012 prophecy .
Some people believe that the shift from the end to the beginning of the calendar will be instantaneous, which is why doomsayers see cataclysmic disaster. The Mayans did not believe in endings; they viewed life as circular. The general meaning behind the end of the Long Count calendar is that there will be an apocalypse, which could be good or bad, since an apocalypse is only the ending of something and beginning of something new. That leaves the possibilities open-ended and vast.
Literal interpretations presume that the ending of the Mayan calendar in 2012 will be not just the end of the world but the end of the universe. This seems rather ridiculous when put into perspective since the calendar's "divine event", as some doomsayers put it, has occurred a few times since the dawn of man and not only are we still here but so is the universe! Nevertheless, there is something eerie about the end of a calendar coming and if it is indeed the beginning of a great time of tribulation for the world, many survivalists have already begin to prepare, in fact, decades ago.
